Family Functions!!
Family functions are usually very mundane affairs where you have the misfortune of meeting unknown relatives and relative unknowns…
A Snippet:
“Do you remember me?”
Yeah rite… you are the one who asked me the same damn question the last time!!
Ofcourse I remember you Uncle, we met the last time (we met).
Luckily my folks aren’t the brightest heads you’ll find.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
But then there are some who simply won’t give up…
So what is my name?
Why are you doing this to me!?!?!?! Ofcourse, you know that I don’t remember names of random strangers.
Uncle, you work with mom at the bank… Ofcourse she’s told me all about you… and just at the right time my dad comes to my rescue “Mr. Vijay* how are you doing?”
Thanks God/Dad I owe you one!!
*name changed - because I dont really remember his name...
---------------------------------------------------------------------
My daughter is doing her engineering in Tom-Dick-and-Harry’s Institute of Technology at DunnoWhere.
Oh nice aunty…. I heard its one of really good colleges IN DunnoWhere
They never get it, do they??
---------------------------------------------------------------------
There you are sitting at a strategically thought-out corner trying to insulate yourself from the ensuing madness when…
“ How are you doing, Ashwin?”
Duh!! Have you ever heard anyone saying “ I FEEL SICK AND I FEEL LIKE DYING!!!”
I am fine, so how are you and the kids?
OMG does he have kids??
Yeah they are fine,….
Phew!! That was close…
---------------------------------------------------------------------
You might have guess by now that I am no extrovert, but I am no shy introvert either. I like indulging in meaningful conversations, though they are non-existent at these occasions.
If you don’t know what to talk about don’t talk. Simple. You are not obligated to talk to me even if you have no choice but to stare at me the entire function.
Don’t ask me the distance between my hostel and my classes
Don’t ask me the distance between my hostel and the mess.
And don’t you dare ask me the distance between my mess and my classes!!

It’s that time of the year again…
The New Year has finally dawned on us and about time too!
It’s time to make starry-eyed resolutions and later lament about how “close” we were to finally fulfilling them.
It’s been one loonnng year but let’s not live in the past but look ahead into what the future has in store for us.
Yes draw the curtains, switch on the smoke screens and bring the crystal ball because Mr. Nostradamus here is going to solve the enigma of 2k10!!….hmm... I don’t think Nostradamus used a crystal ball, did he?
Predictions:
Times now and NDTV are suddenly going to unearth a decade-old case where “justice has not been served” and are doing to go bonkers over it!
Another politician is going to be unwillingly dragged from relative obscurity to public glare with nothing but boxers to cover his manly might.
After free rice, spectacles, sarees, TVs, it’s only a matter of time before Karuna’s going to give away backstage passes for a Linkin Park concert.
Deva’s going to rip another foreign song and blow his own trumpet.
India is going to bow out off the T20 World Cup (again) in shame eventhough its captain Mr. Dhoni piles on the runs in a determined, patient and carefully crafted manner. Now why are we losing??
On a more personal note, I might actually successfully complete two years of college!!
Other predictions are welcome!
Let’s hope and pray that the new year’s a piece of caramel dipped, chocolate iced double-layered cake!!
Whatever happens…
Aal Izz Well!!!

How do you kill time?
Well for starters, time is non-living, so we can’t stab or murder or do shit like that, duh!
Time is eternal; can we kill something that’s eternal?
Does the inability to kill it make it eternal or does its supposed eternity make it impossible to kill??
Common sense says you simply can’t kill time.
But we’ll figure out a way around it pretty soon.
Time is also precious they say.
So simply how precious is it?
Time once lost can’t be regained right.
Like melted ice-cream!!!
You know for sure that no matter how much you freeze it again, its simply not going to taste as good.
So is time as precious as ice-cream??
More appropriately, is ice-cream as precious as time??
Back to square one, I suppose.
how should you manage/kill time?
In spite of the lunatic nature of this post, I would like to introduce a quote which might be mistaken as a sneaky trick by the author just to add a little credibility to this post.
(not the exact words)
" NGOs need more management because they lack the discipline of the bottom line"
- Peter Drucker
Well you can see where I am getting at, right..
For those of you who are still perplexed as to why that this wonderful quote is doing in the middle of this rubbish..
well its pretty simple actually.
so figure it out yourselves!!
So how do you kill time?
…….
….
If you have managed to read this crappy post without winking, blinking or thinking…
Trust me, you have well and truly killed time ;);)...

A Cynic's day out
Because of my lackadaisical approach to anything closely related to planning we ended up entering a clothes shop just a couple of hours before our flight. The ever opportunistic salesman sensing my dad’s fidgeting looks figured he could make a quick deal. I suddenly found myself being bombarded with shirts that would make my dad’s old tweed suit look like Armani. The guy said “Cool choice!”. Hey! I don’t need a 50-year old’s take on what looks good on an 18-year old... Thanks but I can choose for myself. Having not found anything remotely mediocre we left the shop empty handed.
“Namaste!” greeted the hot chick in skirt-and-tops as I boarded the flight. Talk about culture intersection. No welcome cookies, no free beverages!! Welcome to the world of no-frills travel. “Only a five-hour ride”, I lulled myself and already, I was getting bored. How long do I stare into that smiley-faced air hostess! Bored and almost driven to insanity by a toddler who thinks he’s on a bird and “Wooosh!!” goes his mom into an animated description of what I assumed to be Tweety, the canary. I totally flipped out.
Only now did I realize that in-flight magazines ( I’d rather call it picture galleries) were there for a reason. Producing an in-flight book must be really easy don’t you think. Throw in some beautiful locales, hot chicks at a disco, a sun signs page and voila!! It’s done! There’s no motivation to improve it either, obviously you are stuck with it and has absolutely no competition unless momma’s brought her knitting kit along.
With hardly any written text save the editor’s page, I settled on reading the forecast for the month and I was not too enthusiastic about it. I dived straight into my sun sign Sagittarius.Hey most of it was pretty cool. They even guessed it right. “You are going to travel this month to far off places. You might be going on a holiday. You will find happiness in what you do. You will meet a lot of people who ….”
Ahah! They might have got away on any other day, but my mind was just itching for an exercise. Here I am reading an in-flight magazine and guess what predicts, travel!! How convenient, Mr. Nostradamus!!
“You might be going on a holiday”? That’s an awesome prediction too especially in the month of Diwali!! I couldn’t resist it. I skimmed through all signs. They had practically the same content. The guys who made this collection of crap clearly understood the self-centered human mind. We don’t care too much about others and we believe that the world is wholly and fully binding to us and us only. Nice attitude.
Its funny, just a little thought on how things work can get you to believe that there’s someone up there, watching all this madness with a sardonic smile….
“Please fasten your seat belts”, I heard the drone of the animated smiley. Thank God I am saved!

Why Me!!
Often, the situations I end up in make me say this highly hyped phrase over and over again “It’s a funny world out there….”
Why is it that some days, you get up from bed and simply for no reason feel that today’s your day and nothing can possibly go wrong and why is it that on some days anything that can possibly go wrong goes wrong?? Murphy's law I guess...
Let’s take my case… this day was probably the most zemblanitous day (I know what you’re thinking… I googled the antonym for serendipitous!!) of my life…
Date: 9/3/09
Firstly I got up late, nothing usual, just managed to reach class in time only to realize that I had forgotten some books
still that’s but natural. My classes got over without any problem, guess it was the lull before the storm. I get back to my hostel at around 1 o’clock but I had a digital logic lab model exam at 5 pm. So I thought I’d watch a movie and take a nap before cramping my brain with the experiments. Characteristically I overslept and barely managed to reach the lab on time only to realize that I had forgotten to wear shoes which were a necessity there. Then the teacher announced that the test has been postponed but we were asked to do another exercise instead
fair enough… So we went about doing it or atleast trying to do it. After failing to make it work after half-a-dozen tries we realized that the we had a defective breadboard ... so we changed it and the first time we gave the current to it the IC burnt!! Then the pulse generator simply refused to work! I ofcourse, as luck would have it, had a very annoying teacher who took personal strain in making clear that the IC had burnt because of my handling it and that the pulse generator didn’t work because of my Midas touch…
hmph!!. So as the agony finally ended… I managed to just scrape through one truly zemblanitous day…
PS: well at least the day inspired me to discover
ZEMBLANITY!!
